Vertical Webtoon Formatting Guide for Digital Artists
Vertical scrolling digital comics require distinct panel pacing and visual composition compared to traditional print manga:
1. Vertical Gutter Pacing & Emotional Timing
The empty space (gutter) between panels controls reader reading speed. Fast dialogue exchanges should have 80–120px gaps. Dramatic beats, emotional shock, or intimate pauses should extend from 300px to 600px of negative space to force the reader to scroll slowly.
2. Mobile Dialogue Legibility
Over 85% of webtoon readers view chapters on mobile phone screens (375px to 430px wide). Dialogue text must remain comfortably legible at 12–14pt minimum when viewed at native 800px width. Avoid cramming more than 3 sentences into a single speech bubble.
3. Slicing Without Chopping Art
Always place your horizontal slice cuts inside empty white gutters rather than across a character's face, hands, or critical speech bubbles. This guarantees seamless transitions on mobile reading apps without visible compression seams.
